Tracking issues with slow-moving assets (Static Navigation Filtering)

Why your slow-moving vehicle or boat might have tracking gaps and how to fix it.

What is Static Navigation filtering?

Static Navigation is a GPS filtering system that stops your tracker from showing false movement when your vehicle is parked.

What it does: When your vehicle is stationary, it "locks" the GPS position to prevent the location from jumping around (especially when parked in sheds, garages, or under cover where GPS signal is weak).

This is good – it stops that annoying "spider web" pattern on the map when your vehicle is parked.

How does it work?

Your tracker has a motion sensor inside it. Here's what happens:

  1. Vehicle is stationary → Motion sensor detects no movement
  2. Filter activates → GPS position "locks" to the last known location
  3. Prevents false movement → Small GPS errors don't create fake tracking data

This works brilliantly for normal vehicles that park and then drive at regular speeds.

The problem with slow-moving vehicles

Static Navigation can cause issues for:

  • Farm machinery moving at 1-3 km/h (tractors, harvesters, sprayers)
  • Boats in "no wake" zones (under 3 knots)
  • Other slow equipment (forklifts, mowers, specialised vehicles)

What happens: When you're moving very slowly, the motion sensor doesn't detect enough movement to turn off the filter. The tracker thinks you're still parked, so it doesn't update your position.

This causes:

  • Gaps in your tracking data
  • Missing sections of your route
  • Incomplete journey history

Should you disable Static Navigation?

Consider disabling it if:

  • Your vehicle frequently operates at very low speeds (under 5 km/h)
  • You need accurate tracking of slow movements (like spraying patterns, mowing paths, or slow boat movements)
  • You're seeing regular gaps in your tracking data during slow operations

Keep it enabled if:

  • Your vehicle drives at normal road speeds most of the time
  • Accurate tracking when parked is more important than tracking very slow movements

How to disable Static Navigation

Contact our support team at support@trackmyride.com.au and we'll disable the Static Navigation filter for your tracker.

Before we do this, make sure: Your engine on/off detection is set up correctly (see our guide). This is important so your tracker can still go to sleep properly when parked.

Trade-offs to consider

With Static Navigation ON (default):

  • Clean, accurate tracking when parked ✓
  • May miss very slow movements ✗

With Static Navigation OFF:

  • Accurate tracking at all speeds, even very slow ✓
  • May show "jumpy" GPS positions when parked (especially in sheds or garages) ✗

Our recommendation

For most vehicles: Keep Static Navigation enabled. It provides the best overall tracking experience.

For slow-moving equipment: If accurate low-speed tracking is essential for your work (like precision agriculture or detailed marine operations), contact us to disable it.
